| "Nowadays, when the optimistic rationalism of modern civilised society is found to be inadequate, it is our fervent hope, that this study will provide readers in every field of the arts and sciences, with a wide variety of suggestions, questions and new viewpoints, as they read our interpretation of Gunkanjima Island as a miniature analogue of the Japanese archipelago." |

Studies on the Modern Buildings on Gunkanjima (1916-1974) is a remarkable book containing not only painstakingly detailed schematics of Gunkanjima, and a selection from the 20,000 photographs that were taken during its 10+ years in production, but also a textual analyses that reveals a deep insight into the understanding of the lives on that island and how they were inseperable form, and as unique as the architecture itself.
Making Places was privilaged to receive a rare copy of an English translation that preceded a French exhibition of the study in 1986, and has spent many a late night bringing it to you. |
